7 habits to make a better you

By Ami Sarabia

For students spending too much time with Netflix, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People workshop can help take back control. The signature program helps build students’ resumes, develop leadership skills, along with changing personal and interpersonal mindsets.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People workshop is based on a  best-selling book written by the late Dr. Stephen R. Covey. It centers on the effectiveness of reaching one’s goals. The professional workshop will guide students through the seven habits’ principles of effectiveness.

“Sometimes universities contact Franklyn Covey and ask ‘How can we be involved?’ and we approach these universities and see how we can partner with these students,” Debra Lund, global director of PR for Franklin Covey said. “The 7 Habits is definitely content that can prepare a student for both their career and the rest of their lives.”

Cheryl Le Gras, student activities director, will host workshops offering a free 16-hour certification of completion for all A&M-San Antonio students.

Students are required to attend all three Friday sessions or complete two Saturday sessions to receive co-curricular credit.

“It’s completely free. The institution paid for the binders and packets student will get,” Le Gras said. “Think of it as a professional workshop. If you work for companies or go out into the profession, you can sign up to take a 7 Habits class.”

Tina Williams, sociology junior, is one A&M-San Antonio student who took advantage of the program. She learned of 7 Habits at her job and took the opportunity to sign up for the class when it became available at the university.

“I learned that I can shift my paradigms and I can choose how I think and react,” Williams said. “I am going to start incorporating the 7 Habits into work when I am in a negative situation, I will just take some time to pause and practice on that.”

Sessions include interactive activities, group exercises, learning videos and free lunch.

Students can sign up for these workshops on JagSync, call the Student Activities Office at 210-784-1329, or stop by the office in the Central Academic Building, Suite 103.
