SGA President Mary Walker will appoint VP

Psychology senior Mary E. Walker will begin her new role as president of Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s Student Government Association. Walker, who served as vice president this year, ran unopposed for president. The vice president position remains unfilled.

SGA’s constitution gives Walker 30 days after swearing in to appoint a new vice president. If unsuccessful, the senate must appoint a student with two-thirds approval.

Elections came to a close Friday April 7, introducing eight officers.

“I’m looking forward to making positive changes,” Walker said. “I want to make sure everyone is appropriately advocated for.”

The organization will hold a swearing in ceremony at 5 p.m. April 18 in the Vista Room during the next SGA meeting.

Cristina Dominguez, Student Activities coordinator, said 28 students participated in electronic voting for president and other open positions. University enrollment is over 5,000.

All candidates ran unopposed, including five new senators. This leaves open not only the vice president seat but the positions of freshman, sophomore and graduate senators as well.

Erick De Luna, former SGA president, said he supports Walker in her new role.

“She’s [Mary] an amazing person,” De Luna said. “Mary will be the leader that this SGA needs. I have high hopes for the future.”

The association will hold its final meeting 5 p.m. May 2 in Madla Building, Room 225.
