About Mesquite News
The Mesquite serves three primary goals: To report on development issues in the economically underserved areas of San Antonio, including rural areas surrounding the start-up campus of A&M-San Antonio; to showcase the best work of our TAMU-SA undergraduate students; and to experiment with new directions in journalism education.
The journalism learning laboratory is an extension of Texas A&M University San Antonio’s institutional mission to prepare and empower students through innovative and challenging academic and co-curricular programs that contribute to and enrich the economic and social development of the community and region.The student-produced news site was launched in 2011 is supported by the College of Arts & Sciences. The site is updated weekly, except during summer, holidays and examinations.
News contributions are accepted by telephone (210.784.1050) or, better yet, come visit us in Central Academic Building, Room 320, and share your ideas over a cup of coffee. There’s room at the table.
Collaborating With Professionals
The Mesquite offers a specialized teaching/learning model based on the idea that junior- and senior-level journalism students and professional news organizations can share best practices in a fast-changing media environment. In addition to interning at media outlets across the city, we share news tips, stories and meet frequently with professionals employed by the San Antonio-Express News/mysa.com, Univision 41, La Prensa and NOWCast and other digital first outlets to ensure we — the students — are making crucial connections in new media.

The Mesquite is a member of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, Associated Collegiate Press and the Society of Professional Journalists.
