Kinesiology Club to host first meeting of semester

The Kinesiology Club is preparing for its first virtual meeting for this academic year at 4 p.m. Sept. 24 on Zoom.
Alyiah Carbajal, president and kinesiology senior, said this will be the club’s first monthly meeting.
The club will meet on the last Thursday of every month.
“Usually in person we have a lot of events, but we’re not gonna be able to do that because of everything, so we’re trying to make it up by trying to do as much stuff online as we can.” Carbajal said.
The club requires $10 dues from members. Carbajal said they can expect fun activities, virtual talks from physical therapists and athletic trainers, exercise challenges to keep students active, and lab training.

FYE hosts annual speaker series, “A Vote For Us.”

The Office of First-Year Experience is hosting its annual Speaker Series featuring the author of “Vote For Us,” Joshua A. Douglas. It will be hosted virtually from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 30 on Webex.
Students will get an in-depth look into the book, exploring the power of civic engagement. Douglas will attend to discuss his book and answer questions from students.
Peer leader Kasandra Vela, organizer of the event, talked about how this book was chosen for first-year students.
“We chose this book because voting and civic engagement is really big in our community, “Vela said. “The book heavily talks about the importance of voting and the change it can make. We think it’s important, not only for first-year students, but our student body in general.”

Monthly meetings to provide bonding for students, mentors

The Transfer Student Engagement office is offering monthly virtual meet-ups to help fulfill meeting requirements between transfer students and their mentors in the Silver Liners Transfer Mentorship Program.
Mentor Monday, via Zoom, is from 10-11 a.m. and 6-7 p.m. Sept. 28.
Future meetings will be from 10-11 a.m. and 6-7 p.m. on Oct. 26 and Nov. 30 The office will send an email to its members with links to the meetings.
Mentor Monday will host activities such as a scavenger hunt, Kahoot and Pictionary. The event is only for members of the program, said Cheyenne Zavala, lead mentor.
Juan Espinoza, adviser, said the Silver Liners Transfer Mentorship Program, created last May, has shown “great promise” in helping transfer students finish their education. Several past mentees have returned as mentors due to their experience.
“The impact that we have had on the transfer students, both mentors and mentees, has been very, very positive,” Espinoza said. “I don’t think that I would call it a positive one if I didn’t have returning mentors.”
