Texas A&M University-San Antonio has partnered with the VIA Metropolitan Transit, which is San Antonio’s public transportation system, to create two programs giving students to access free transportation with a valid student/staff ID.

The U-Pass program provides an unlimited amount of rides to students each semester.

The VIA Link program, which works similarly to Uber within a served local area, will operate seven days a week, 5:30 a.m.- 9:30 p.m.

Lorraine Pulido, Communications Manager for the VIA Metropolitan Transit, explained the success of the VIA Link since it launched.

“We have seen a very successful early adoption of the VIA Link south zone service, with more than 1600 riders using the service since its launch on Aug. 8,” she said.

VIA Link is similar to Uber and Lyft but Pulido believes that VIA Link provides more benefits for students, faculty and staff.

“VIA Link’s app-based van ride share service offers better frequency, additional hours of operation and improved access to convenient trip options with the same fares and discounts as bus services,” she said.

Pulido said the last day for the old bus route is on Oct. 23 and will be replaced by the current system.

VIA Link south includes destinations such as Palo Alto College, A&M-San Antonio, Texas Vista Medical Center, South Park Mall, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Walmart and HEB.

There are three pick-up and drop-off points on campus. One of them is north of the Welcome Center, located in the Madla building.
