With Sept. 20 marking National Voter Registration Day, civic engagement volunteers and organizations across the country worked in a mass effort to register eligible voters.

The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 11.

Missed the chance to register to vote with the local civic chapter on Sept. 20? Here is a step-by-step guide on how to register in the state of Texas.

Step 1: Visit VoteTexas.gov

VoteTexas is a website powered by the Texas Secretary of State that provides voter information and resources.

Step 2: Start a new voter registration application

Click on “Start a new voter registration application here.”

To complete a voter registration application, individuals must be citizens of the United States and 18 years of age on or before election day.

No access to a printer? Request a printed application be mailed to a home address or visit a local voter registrar to complete the process in person.

Step 3: Fill out the application

The application will ask for a name, date of birth and a Texas driver’s license number or Texas personal identification number. Those without access to a Texas driver’s license or personal identification can use the last four digits of their social security number.

Step 4: Submit, print and sign

Submit the application, print it and sign it. Online voter registration is not yet an option for Texas voters.

Step 5: Stamp and mail

After signing and dating the application, it must be placed in an envelope with a first-class stamp on it — there are stamps for sale in the mailroom of Texas A&M University-San Antonio, located in the Central Academic Building room 116. The cost of a stamp is 60 cents.

Then, address the envelope to the county’s registrar: the address will be printed at the top of the application. To mail the envelope, place the envelope in a mailbox or another appropriate dropbox.

Step 6: Vote!

Within 30 days of submitting the voter registration application, a voter registration certificate will be mailed to the applicant.

Two to four weeks before elections, check a polling locator site or check with the respective elections administrator to know where to cast a ballot.

Voters must have an acceptable form of photo identification and a voter registration card ready for Election Day.
