The Black Student Union reflected on achievements and plans for more community engagement and social events for the fall during their last meeting of spring April 20 in Room 165 of the Science and Technology Building.
“We want to do more events that are centered around the Black community,” said D’Markus Floyd, president of the Black Student Union. “Although there’s a number of Black students on campus, especially living in the dorms, only a few participate in the organization.”
Floyd hosted the meeting in person. Most members attended through Zoom.
The organization hosted several events this semester including Sneaker Ball, Pass the Aux, Trap Bingo and more. They also attended events with Black Student Unions from other universities.
One of their featured events is Mental Health Monday, where members are encouraged to be vulnerable and address their mental health.
“We’re looking forward to a continued partnership with other Black Student Union organizations from University of Texas in San Antonio and St. Mary’s University,” Floyd said.
The organization will be participating in this year’s Festival de Cascarones selling chamoy, Tajin and candy 1-8 p.m. April 30 on campus.
They will also be participating in Fiesta by volunteering for a blues band and reading books to children.
The Black Student Union recently competed in this year’s Jaguar Awards and received recognition as “Student Organization of the Year,” with Floyd recognized as “Student Organization President of the Year.”
