Career Week Launches with Cookies, Caffeine and Careers Event

Career Adviser Bennett Grey meets with students during the Cookies, Caffeine and Careers event.

Career week launched successfully on Monday with the Cookies, Caffeine and Careers event, a kickoff informational session to inform students of the multiple ways Career Services can assist students in career planning and professional development.

Career Advisers Bennett Grey and Kathleen Frank reached out to more than 60 students in the Student Center, answering questions and seeking information as students ebbed and flowed around the information table. Chocolate and m&m cookies were picked up as quickly as informational fliers.

Grey and Frank, career advisers for the University, used their high energy to reach out one by one with students who came up to the table for information, cookies and program information. Students who were not aware of Career Week left with a plan to attend sessions later in the week. Grey and Frank marketed the week’s offerings by connecting with students, answering each question individually.

The bustling Student Center sounded like this:

“Hello, are you going to the career fair Thursday or Friday?
“Here’s a list of the employers that are going to show up.”
“What’s your major?”
“We’re here if you need any assistance writing your resume.”
“Did you take a list of employers that are coming to the fair? All these employers are going to be there.”
“Stop by the career fair. Network a little bit.”

Education Senior Wanda DeLeon said the event serves as a reminder to plan ahead.

“I didn’t realize that I should go [to the career fair] right now. I don’t graduate until the fall,” said DeLeon, who will be student teaching in fall 2011.

Frank and Grey distributed information on resume writing, names of companies that will be attendance at Thursday and Fridays’ career fairs, career week activities and services available to students on campus.

Senior Psychology major Laura Hernandez said the information provided by Career Services was helpful and straightforward. Hernandez plans on attending the career fair on Thursday and connecting with an accounting firm, like Fisher, Herbst, Kemble, PC.

“I’m going after anything that has to do with accounting,” said Hernandez, who also has experience in accounting. “I’m looking into doing CPA work.”

Criminology junior Janeen Caldera plans on attending one of the resume workshops and interview skills workshops offered today and Wednesday.

“I think it’s important to go over interviewing skills again because we’re going to be interviewing for different jobs,” Caldera said.

Criminology senior Nicolette Muniz said the resume tip sheet provided by Career Services included very important information on how to build or update a professional resume, especially for students who do not currently have one.

Even though Muniz is not graduating this spring, she still plans on taking advantage of the career fair this week.

“What I’m definitely looking forward to is to see the opportunities waiting for me once I graduate. I want to see who is looking for what and what requirements are they looking for,” Muniz said.

The career fair offers students a chance to meet potential employers in a neutral environment, rather than in a formal office setting which might be intimidating for students who do not have any previous job hunting experience.

“It’s kind of like an icebreaker,” Muniz said.

Career Week continues with workshops scheduled today and Wednesday followed by the Career Fair on Thursday and the Education Job Fair on Friday.
