The Department of Educator and Leadership Preparation will host the Best of Both Worlds symposium from 6:30-8 p.m. April 8 in the Vista Room of the Central Academic Building at Texas A&M University-San Antonio.
This year, the symposium is titled “Beyond Academics: A Holistic Approach to Student Support and Success,” and it will focus on student mental health.
A panel of six people will speak and answer questions: Derrick Brown, principal, Young Men’s Leadership; Priscilla Alfaro, principal, Young Women’s Leadership; Elizabeth Campos, Texas House of Representatives, District 119; Tommy Calvert, Bexar County Commissioner, Precinct 4; Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson, Community Engagement Coordinator, Carver Center; and Jessica Knudsen, CEO/President of Clarity Child Guidance Center.
The event is open to all students and members of the community.
Organizers hope students and community members, such as principals and teachers, will be inspired by the success of the panelists.
“We like to share best practices whenever possible and have people learn from one another,” Elisabeth Krimbill, associate professor of educational leadership, said.
About 150 A&M-San Antonio students, other students and community stakeholders are expected to attend the annual symposium, which began in 2018.
Questions will be submitted to the panel of speakers beforehand.
Lawrence Scott, associate professor of educational leadership, said the Department of Educator and Leadership Preparation founded the symposium to give students an opportunity to apply what they learned in class while meeting with school and community leaders to learn about important topics they will face in their future careers.
