Updated Feb. 11: The General’s Growl Athletics Pep Rally has been postponed and rescheduled to April 6 because of inclement weather.

Texas A&M University-San Antonio will host the first General’s Growl Athletics Pep Rally at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 in Lot 3. The drive-through pep rally will initiate the softball and golf seasons.

A&M-San Antonio has launched the softball and men’s golf teams this semester. General’s Growl will be an opportunity to introduce these teams to the campus.

“It’ll be a drive-in option. We’ll have a stage, we’ll have some swag and giveaways,” said Darnell Smith, director of intercollegiate athletics and recreational sports. “Come early and find a good spot to get to know the teams.”

The pep rally will take place in Lot 3 to provide more space for students, faculty and staff to attend.

Smith said it will be a safe environment where people can drive-through and engage with the event.

“This will definitely be the first (pep rally) in the school’s history for intercollegiate athletics,” Smith said. “We’re looking forward to a lot of support, a lot of people coming out and cheering us on as we continue this legacy and build off of it.”

Despite challenges brought by the pandemic, the teams are excited to debut in the pep rally.

“Now the time (to introduce the teams) is here, they get to showcase their skills and talents to let everyone know that they’re part of this community and they look forward to representing our campus,” Smith said. “I invite everyone to come out and be part of this history.”

Smith said there will be a screen where team members will be showcased with headshots and bios.

“With COVID, it was challenging to introduce them in a way that got everyone fired up,” Smith said. “We found a creative way to be able to do it.”

There will be a dance challenge between General the Jaguar, the school mascot, and those who wish to participate.

“Whoever wants to participate, I will be seeking any and all challengers who dare go up against General. His dance moves are legendary and he is hard to beat,” Smith said.

The Jaguarettes dance team will perform and cheer for the new teams on stage to conclude General’s Growl.
