Got a parking ticket? UPD chief offers alternative

By Felicia Palomo

You know that moment. You walk out of class, ready to get home and pick up some Whataburger when that bright yellow paper flashes from under the windshield wiper: the famous parking ticket.

Marisa Borroel, Texas A&M University-San Antonio police communication supervisor, said parking violations are the most common citations issued on campus. As of Feb. 11, UPD issued 108 parking citations for parking on campus without a permit

More than 2,600 students purchased parking permits in the 2015-2016 school year, 1000 less than last year at this time.

UPD regulations require parking permits for students, faculty and staff. Passes, available annually, vary depending on the semester, ranging from  $60 for fall, $40 for spring and $20 for summer.

If anyone receives a citation for parking without a permit, they can simply purchase a parking permit and the UPD will reduce the citation to a warning at no cost, said UPD Chief Ron Davidson.

The UPD on Main Campus is located in the Madla building, Room 103.  The Brooks City-Base UPD is located in Room 156.

With approximately 4500 students enrolled to date, parking on the A&M-San Antonio campus isn’t that big of a struggle compared to larger universities.

Typically there are plenty of parking spots available for students with parking permits in the East lot (at the intersection of  University Way and Verano Parkway).

Students without a permit have the option of parking along the mile-long road without running the risk of being cited without a permit.

For questions regarding campus parking regulations and details on obtaining a parking permit, contact UPD’s non-emergency line at 210-784-1900. For more information on other parking violations and prices, visit the UPD’s page regarding parking
