The Jaguarettes dance team will host a virtual “ugly sweater” contest from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 10.

Students, faculty, staff and organizations can participate in sharing their loudest, gaudiest and most absurd holiday sweaters with the Jaguar community.

Anyone interested in participating must send a direct message and a photo of their ugly sweater by 5 p.m. Dec. 10 to the dance team Instagram page @am_sa_jaguarettes.

The Jaguarettes will post the photos on Instagram and the TexasA&M University-San Antonio community has until 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10 to cast their vote via Instagram stories and choose the winner.

“It’s been a struggle to keep everyone in good spirit so this is something the team wanted to do to have fun and bring clubs and organizations together,” said Courtney Bobb-Meilinger, coach/adviser of the dance team.

According to a 2019 CNN article, over the decades the festive — and usually loud — knit garment has become a new holiday tradition. The fashion industry began offering its own designs for the knit trend. Social media has only helped the trend grow, inviting users to share pictures of their “ugly sweaters.”

The coronavirus pandemic has made it  hard to bring the campus’ clubs and organizations together. This event will give clubs and organizations the opportunity to share photos and participate in the voting process, said Bobb-Meilinger.
