Students who want to volunteer at the San Antonio Food Bank on Saturday must sign up by 11:59 p.m. June 23 on the GivePulse and San Antonio Food Bank websites.

Hosted by the Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement, the volunteer opportunity is from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. June 26 at the food bank warehouse, 5200 Enrique M. Barrera Parkway.

Volunteers will be packaging materials and moving boxes to get them ready to be transported to families in need, according to Chloe Martinez, AmeriCorps Public Ally at the Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement.

Martinez said she chose the food bank because they have had a shortage of volunteers due to the pandemic. Martinez also said when volunteering with the food bank in the past it has been organized and clear about its expectations.

Martinez said students have volunteered at the food bank’s urban farm and Mission San Juan community farm.

Martinez said students should wear long pants, Texas A&M University-San Antonio T-shirts and supportive, closed-toe shoes since they will be volunteering in a warehouse setting.

Face masks are required by the food bank and a facilitator will have extras in case anyone forgets. Social distancing will be in effect, which is why signing up for the event in advance is required.

Students should arrive at the food bank at 8:45 a.m. and enter through the main entrance. A food bank employee will be able to check students in and guide them to where they are needed.

Students volunteering the event will get service hours recorded, which are used to qualify for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

To register for the volunteer opportunity, visit https://www.givepulse.com/event/230996-San-Antonio-Food-Bank-Off-Campus-Volunteer-Opportunity and select register in the top right corner. After registering with GivePulse volunteers will be redirected to the food bank’s page to complete their registration.
