Texas A&M University-San Antonio will be offering a new course for honors students titled “Music and Politics” in the fall semester for juniors and seniors across all majors.
The upper-level honors class will be presented in an interactive seminar format and team-taught by Dr. Martha Saywell from the music program and Lecturer Eugen Nagy of Political Science.
They will collaborate to bridge the gap between music and politics and equip students with a deeper understanding of their intersection and influence throughout history.
“It is important to bring back the holistic human existence view because we are more complex than just one field,” says Professor Nagy.
In our life music and politics are not separated. These subjects have a relationship between each other.
The course will be similar to music appreciation classes, with a focus on analyzing how music and politics interact. Students will be introduced to the basic understanding of each field of study and will make connections between the two.
“There will be a lot of listening to music from all over the world and from different centuries and genres.” said Nagy. For example, the class will study about the “The Singing Revolution.” The focus will be to understand how music and events relate during this political time period.
At the end of the course, the students will compose their own case study. They are free to select any topic of their preference and will need to evaluate both the political and musical aspects of their chosen topic, analyzing how these two areas interact with each other.
The course is open to all majors as long as they are either juniors or seniors.
The course number is 3300, Advanced Honors Seminar, offered from 3:30 p.m.- 4:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting in the Fall. This class will be offered face to face in Classroom Hall 301. The first day of class will be Aug.26.
