The Mays Center and the Office of First-Year Experience are collaborating to host a panel event focused on voter education at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 in the auditorium of Texas A&M University-San Antonio.
The panel, called “Voting 101: Educate, Empower, Engage,” will feature representatives from the NAACP, NextGen America, the League of Women Voters and the City of San Antonio MLK Commission.
“All the organizations represented are nonpartisan, which is very important because we want to make sure this is a neutral space for conversation,” said Clarissa Tejeda, the Director of Employee Relations and Community Outreach at the Mays.
This will be the university’s first time hosting the panel, but the Mays Center and FYE have different engagement events throughout the year as part of their action plan to educate voters and get them to the polls.
A&M-San Antonio was recognized by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge for voting engagement in the 2022 cycle as a gold standard polling site and one of the top Hispanic Serving Institutions.
The panel will be paired with a tabling in the auditorium lobby with some of the organizations to have one-on-one conversations with attendants.
Tejeda said every voice matters – it goes beyond casting a ballot. Opening the event to the public was important, because the campus is centered around a community beyond the students.
Attendees are encouraged to sign up with Jagsync, which will provide an external link to obtain a guest permit for parking. Permits will also be available on the day of the event.
