Teatro Palo Alto is staging a free live-virtual production of jo reyes-boitel’s “she wears bells” under the direction of Amber Ortega, adjunct professor of dance at Palo Alto College.

The production is being performed over two weeks, at 7 p.m. Oct. 22-24 and 7 p.m. Oct. 28-30. It will be online and streamed on Facebook and YouTube, which is free and open to the public.

“she wears bells” chronicles the journey of the Aztec Coyolxauhqui, who is exiled to the moon after losing her battle on Earth, according to a short overview provided by reyes-boitel.

“It is about making theater relevant for the community and the Latino experience and culture,” Ortega said. “We want them to feel more comfortable in a place that tells stories from their perspective.”

The production will be performed in English and Nahuatl, an Aztec language. It will also have elements such as music, chanting and spoken word.

Many community members were heavily involved during the development, including guest musician Ceibi ili. She will be performing all the live music and sounds on stage with instruments, even with some she made herself.

“It is a hybrid piece, so it is going to challenge the community who comes in expecting a typical play,” said reyes-boitel, a San Antonio playwright.

For more information about the production, contact Nicolas Castañon, assistant professor of fine, performing and communication arts, at ncastanon3@alamo.edu or visit https://www.alamo.edu/pac/teatro/.
