History major Martin Calderon began his freshman year in the enviable role as first soccer captain for A&M-San Antonio’s soccer club. “This team is going to be here way after I’m gone, so honestly, it’s an honor and privilege to call myself the captain,” he told us. As competitive club sports gain a foothold at A&M-San Antonio, students are now competing against other university club teams. The driving energy behind the clubs’ growth are the incoming freshman, students like Calderon. The soccer club suffered some losses this season, but the real story behind A&M-San Antonio’s new team is their impressive mental toughness and long-range strategies to continue building.
