Video: Interview with SGA President Mary Walker
In April, students elected psychology major Mary E. Walker to become A&M-San Antonio’s Student Government Association president. Walker ran unopposed. And, only 28 students voted from a population of more than 5,000 students. From our perspective, that was concerning for a fast-growing campus with a diverse student population. Did the students not know about SGA, or did they not care? We learned through surveys and one-on-one conversations that they definitely do care. The problem? A high percentage of students are unaware of the role of student government in their lives. As part of a three-week reporting project, we set out to provide students with an overview of Student Government’s purpose, structure, finances, priorities and communication strategy with the student body.
