Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s Student Government Association motioned to approve a health and wellness bill that will provide free contraceptives, menstrual hygiene products and sexual education material for students on campus.
During the Sept. 16 SGA senate meeting, the bill was brought to the floor for corrections and improvements by Andrea Martinez, speaker of the senate.
Senate Secretary Kirsten Garcia, read the bill in its entirety to the senate.
“Our student government strongly promotes that the university provides free contraception, sexual education material and menstrual hygiene products on campus, whereas these products are of human right and necessity,” Kirsten said.
“Where they are always available to students and that be provided free of charge to enrolled students of the university.”
Garcia followed the statement by explaining the SGA’s support for this bill to be passed.
“We pushed for something like this to be made available,” Kirsten said.
“We just want to show our support,” she said. “Of course, these services include but not being limited to free contraception, sex education material, STD testing resources and free menstrual hygiene products.”
The products will be located in Esperanza Hall, non-binary bathrooms and department offices around campus.
SGA will be looking for more locations on campus to make these products accessible for students and staff.
