Texas A&M University-San Antonio will stream the United States presidential inauguration at 11 a.m. on Jan. 20 on the West Lawn. Students are invited to watch the transition of powers on campus.
President-elect Joe Biden will become the 46th president of the United States after the race against President Donald Trump.
The event will be similar to the Election Day watch party; it will be hosted by the Campus Activities Board, Mays Center, First Year Experience and Student Government Association.
The watch party will be outside for safety reasons. Students are advised to stay with their group. There will be chalk marks on the ground to ensure social distancing, said Myrna Garza, First-Year Experience coordinator.
Face masks are required to attend the event.
“We want students to enjoy the event but also be very safe about it,” Garza said.
Students who attend will have the opportunity to discuss the goals Biden has set. Afterward, students are encouraged to discuss what other goals they hope the president will accomplish.
Students attending the event can learn how to hold the new administration accountable.
“We have created a brochure in the hopes that this hopefully can create conversations,” Garza said. “We also give resources on how to contact state officials…and also (local officials).”
Students who would like more information about holding government officials or the new administration accountable can contact First Year Experience or Aaron Guerrero, the Mays Center civic engagement coordinator.
The university will try to stream the inauguration on televisions across campus too.
“We will have a DJ playing while things aren’t really happening,” Garza said. Chili, pan dulce and hot chocolate will be provided for those attending as well as giveaways.
