As the deadline for voter registration approaches, the Bexar County Elections Department and other agencies and organizations are lining up resources for this year’s upcoming election.
Residents have until Oct. 5 to register to vote on Election Day Nov. 3 or during early voting Oct. 13-30.
Visitors to the Bexar County Elections website can find links to register to vote, check their registration status and find early voting locations and information on how to vote safely during a pandemic.
It’s important for young people to vote and join the political process, said Jonathan Gutierrez, San Antonio field organizer with MOVE Texas, a nonpartisan, nonprofit, grassroots organization that promotes civic engagement among underrepresented youths and young adults.
“We have an incredible opportunity here to rethink what we want the future of Texas to look like,” Gutierrez said. “This also includes reimagining what participation looks like across the state when we have more young people involved in the process.”
Here’s how to get involved by casting your ballot:
First, are you eligible to vote? Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age on the day of the election and not a convicted felon. For more information on eligibility, visit this Bexar County Elections webpage.
Are you already registered to vote in Bexar County? Those unsure of their voting status can enter their date of birth and house number at the Voter Registration Check page on the county’s election website.
Are you registered to vote somewhere else? If you have lived in another county or state, you can check that address here: https://movetexas.org/register/.
How do you register to vote?
Complete a voter registration application on the Texas Secretary of State website: https://vrapp.sos.state.tx.us/index.asp. Fill out the application online. Print, sign and then mail, fax, or deliver the application in person to:
1103 S. Frio, Ste. 100
San Antonio, TX 78207
When is the deadline?
The deadline to register is Oct. 5. If you mail your application, it must be postmarked by that date, according to votetexas.gov.
Can you register to vote online in Texas? U.S. district judge Judge Orlando Garcia of San Antonio ruled on Aug. 28 that registering to vote online is allowed for those updating their driver’s license or submitting a change-of-address application, according to the Texas Tribune and Garcia’s order. Garcia ruled that the Texas Department of Public Safety must comply with the National Voter Registration Act and update its online system by Sept. 23.
