Chalk it up for Women’s History Month
By Stormy J. Rice
Texas A&M University-San Antonio will be hosting the socially distanced event “Chalk it Up for Women’s History” from 10 a.m. to noon on March 18 in the courtyard of the Central Academic Building.
The campus will be providing free chalk and gloves for students to decorate the walkways and celebrate women they look up to in their lives.
Women’s History Month is a chance for people to celebrate successful women who have made a difference.
Academic coach John De La Rosa said it’s important for the university to celebrate Women’s History Month because the student body is predominantly female.
“It’s absolutely one of those things that makes sense to take that initiative,” De La Rosa said. “This is a small token we can do to recognize, acknowledge and celebrate Women’s History Month.”
Women represented 63% of student enrollment at A&M-San Antonio in fall 2020, according to President Cynthia Teniente-Matson’s report to the Faculty Senate on March 5.
The chalk event gives students the artistic freedom to write or draw about historical women they want to celebrate or recognize, said peer coach Taryn Deppe.
Students also can recognize “a current woman that’s making things happen in the world or someone from the university,” Deppe said.
Despite Gov. Greg Abbott’s mask mandate order to open Texas back up to 100%, COVID-19 precautions will still be taking place.
“There’s still going to be social distancing,” De La Rosa said. “Those protocols and procedures are in place as of right now.”
“We’ll have gloves, we’ll have chalk, we’ll provide it all. It’s going to be a fantastic event,” De La Rosa said.
