Texas A&M University-San Antonio launched a new educational agreement with Univision 41 San Antonio, offering an exclusive connection for students to career experiences in media and communications.
“Univision Media Lab – Capstone Experience” will offer faculty-led courses beginning in spring 2018 in the heart of the Univision studios. Senior-level students who are enrolled will take classes conducted on-site and also have the opportunity to apply for internships.
This program bridges senior-year students on track to receive their bachelor’s degree in communications to essential job exposure.
“We are pleased to collaborate with Texas A&M University-San Antonio, helping to empower the next generation of media talent through a meaningful career development experience,” said Chris Morris, vice president and general manager of Univision San Antonio, in a press release.
Enrolled students will have access to Univision San Antonio’s newsroom and the five radio stations within the facility, including: Univision Deportes San Antonio, Qué Buena 92.9, KXTN 107.5, 98.5 The Beat and Latino Mix 95.1 San Antonio.
To add, students have the opportunity to connect with seasoned multimedia professionals through mentorships in the program.
Ribbon-cutting Ceremony
On the afternoon of Nov. 8, students, faculty and Univision affiliates attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new partnership at Univision San Antonio on Network Boulevard.
Speakers at the ceremony included Morris, A&M-San Antonio President Cynthia Teniente-Matson, Senator José Menéndez and Liliana Ranon, Univision director of community empowerment, and Guillermo Nicolas.
Students and guests were provided a catered reception by Mi Tierra followed by a group tour of the facility.
Ruben Cantu, production assistant at Univision, shared his experience with the group as a student who benefited from Univision’s “Proyecto U” internship during his time at the University of the Incarnate Word.
“My advice to students, even those who are not communication majors, (is) to take as many internships as you can. Nothing beats experience,” Cantu said.
Cantu stressed that communication students should delve into different fields under the media umbrella.
“From reporting to public relations and other multimedia, just try what you can.”
Classes begin January 17, 2018 and recruitment is underway for Fall 2018. Communication seniors who are interested in the program should reach out to Jenny Moore, director of student media, at jenny.moore@tamusa.edu for more information.
