Edward Westermann, a retired history professor from Texas A&M University-San Antonio, will be honored with an endowed lecture series in his name in spring 2027, and the history program is fundraising to establish the endowment, with support from University Advancement.

The Edward Westermann Distinguished Lecture Series will be the second endowment series for history and the first to honor a faculty member at A&M-San Antonio.

“I am deeply honored to be recognized with a Lecture Series in my name,” Westermann said. “It is an honor that I share with my former students and the next generation of Jaguars who will benefit from having access to expert speakers as part of their university experience.”

Westermann was a history professor at A&M-San Antonio in the Department of History, Philosophy, and Geography for 15 years. During his time here, he was recognized as a Regents and Piper Professor of History. He is also a well-known scholar of the Holocaust and Nazi Germany.

The Edward Westermann Distinguished Lecture Series will focus on topics in European and world history. The idea is to bring outside scholars to A&M-San Antonio to speak with students, staff and members of the public each year.

“This will be a significant educational opportunity for our students, staff, faculty and the general public,” said William Kiser, the department chair of History, Philosophy, and Geography.

The history program is taking donations to make the Edward Westermann Distinguished Lecture Series an annual event. The goal is to raise at least $10,000 to help fund the guest speaker and provide a stipend to cover their travel costs.

Kiser said the endowed lecture series is special because it is the first to be named for a former faculty member at A&M-San Antonio and is supported by donations from “faculty, staff and alumni who worked with Dr. Westermann and whom he positively impacted over his 15 years at the university.”

As of Feb. 26, the history program has raised $4,872 toward the $10,000 goal. To contribute to the Endowment of the Edward Westermann Distinguished Lecture Series, visit website here
