Six virtual fitness classes for students, faculty and staff at Texas A&M University-San Antonio will continue through May 31, and Jaguar Recreational Sports will announce a new schedule for the rest of the summer.
The classes, previously hosted on campus, went virtual the week of March 23 to follow social distancing guidelines.
Teresa de la Torre, fitness instructor at A&M San Antonio, said there are many benefits to fitness classes during this uncertain time.
“When you’re keeping your body active, it is really good for your mental health as well,” de la Torre said.
Classes are taught through Zoom and can be found by accessing JagFit Live on Facebook. Anybody can join as a member to see all available classes and schedules. The following classes continue until May 31:
- Vinyasa Flow: 11-11:50 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday,
- AMPD Resistance: noon-1 p.m. Tuesday
- STRONG60: noon-1 p.m. Thursday
- Kettlebell AMPD: 6-6:50 p.m. Monday and Wednesday
- Zumba Dance Party!: 7-7:50 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 6-6:50 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday
- Bedtime Restorative Yoga: 8-8:50 p.m. Monday and Wednesday
All classes originally available in person are still available to participate in through Zoom, such as Zumba, Yoga and HIIT classes.
Zoom classes allow students and faculty to follow along at their own pace. Participants can turn off their devices cameras so they can do their workout privately while still staying in touch with the instructor.
“Most people don’t want the camera on them … and that’s fine as long as they can see us, and we can still chat with them on there,” de la Torre said.
Typically classes would end during finals week, but the positivity that comes with these classes is needed, De la Torre said.
School policies may change but the fitness classes will remain in session; if policies change they could go back to in person but for now they will continue online.
“Yeah, we are not going to stop, for sure,” de la Torre said.
