Grammy Award winning Henry Brun & The Latin Playerz Trio performed for students, faculty and staff Oct. 12 in the courtyard of Main Campus Building during the campus’ final Hispanic Heritage celebration.
The Latin Jazz Trio performed Latin favorites such as “Quizás, Quizás, Quizás” to applause and requests for more music.
“I feel like I’m on vacation, especially with all the testing that’s going on. It gives you a nice little period to relax and recover,” English and education junior Teresa Ruiz said.
Henry Brun & The Latin Playerz Trio performance concluded the A&M-San Antonio Hispanic Heritage celebrations, which is celebrated Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 in the United States to recognize and appreciate the heritage and culture of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The celebrations, students said, brought a feeling of community to campus.
“It’s cool, it brings more morale to the school,” said education senior Gilbert Campos as he enjoyed the music while completing his homework.
Henry Brun & The Latin Playerz Trio said they were excited to have been invited to the university to play and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with students, faculty and staff.
“It’s great. It’s the only way to keep in touch with culture; to recognize there is more to Spanish [Latin] music than tejano, conjunto and mariachi,” Henry Brun, recording artist and percussion player, said. “The variety makes people aware of the culture around the world.”
The office of student engagement and success organized the series of events to invite the campus community to reflect on Hispanic Heritage month.
The event brought members of the campus community together to pause, listen and reflect.
“[The event] provides the students an opportunity to listen, to think about the school and its place in the community,” history Professor Ed Westermann said.
