Texas A&M University-San Antonio Jaguars faced the Texas College Steers on Jan. 23 and the Huston-Tillotson University Rams on Jan. 28; the final games of the month. The Jaguars women’s team could not keep momentum on the road, coming off of a home win. The Jaguars men’s team continues to try and minimize mistakes to snap their losing streak.
Lady Jaguars start new year with win
The game against the Steers took off to a blazing pace for both teams, neither letting up on the defensive end halfway through the first quarter. From then on, the tone of the contest was set, creating fast break gameplay.
The match pace allowed for the Lady Jaguars to be defensive. The Lady Jaguars keyed in on full-court presses that led to 19 Lady Jaguar points off of 24 Steer turnovers.
“I feel like points off turnovers is crucial for us,” freshman forward Emily Carranco said. “It’s a momentum getter.” Carranco went five of nine from three-point shots, a career best.
The Lady Jaguars were able to capitalize off of opportunities from the speed of the game which led to numerous shooting fouls.
Junior guard Evelyn Lorenzo was able to make half of these for The Lady Jaguars, cashing in on nine of eighteen team free throws.
Freshman guard TaMya Whitemon led the team in rebounds, grabbing a total of six. Whitemon also assisted in capping off a strong first half for the Lady Jaguars by scoring a buzzer beater before halftime.
This helped the Lady Jaguars to continue riding momentum for the rest of the game.
The Steers outrebounded the Lady Jaguars 40 to 31. This assisted the Steers to play with fearlessness towards the end of the fixture to cut the Lady Jaguar’s lead down from a 27 point deficit to 19.
The Jaguars defeated the Steers 83-64, giving the Lady Jaguars the season series win over the Steers 2-0, and their first win of 2025.
“It feels great, especially with us, we just haven’t been ourselves,” Lorenzo said.
“Us getting back to what we’re used to doing,” Lorenzo said. “Being aggressive the whole game.”
Lady Jaguars shooting woes
The Lady Jaguars road game versus the Lady Rams was a back-and-forth battle, as both teams forced turnovers and hustled for loose balls.
Both squads exchanged leads constantly, which led to neither team gaining a large lead advantage. The contest had a total of 12 lead changes.
Although the Lady Jaguars put up more field goal attempts, they missed more shots than the Lady Rams. Missed free throw opportunities were a factor in this tight game.

The Lady Rams shot a 41.5% field goal percentage and made 13 out of 17 of their free throws at 76.5%. Compared to the Lady Jaguars 34.7% field goal percentage and made nine out of 15 free throws at 60%.
The Lady Jaguars lose to the Lady Rams 65-68. Lady Jaguars drop to 14-8 overall and 11-7 in Red River Athletic Conference play.
The next home game for the Lady Jaguars is against North American University Stallions Feb.1 in the Student Recreation Center at 1 p.m.
Jaguar turnovers diminish fifteen point lead.
Coming into this game against the Steers, the Jaguars are on a three game losing streak. After beating top seeded Xavier University of Louisiana Gold for the Jaguars first home win of 2025.
Similar to the beginning of the Lady Jaguars contest, the start of this game was tightly contested among both sides.
The Steers were efficient in pushing up their tempo offensively, and complimenting that on the defensive end with full-court presses the whole first half.
This defensive pressure led to many frantic movements from the Jaguars during their possessions, which resulted in 12 first half turnovers from the Jaguars.
The Jaguars countered this game plan with many drives towards the paint, and getting fouls in their favor. The Jaguars’ determination in the paint paid off as they were 14 of 19 from free throw range in the first half.
The Jaguars only trailed by six points at half.
In the second half the Jaguars clawed their way back to the lead, with help from senior guard Alex Nunnally scoring 17 points off the bench and knocking down four three-pointers.
The Jaguars better second half shooting and offensive rebounding helped them build a 69-54 lead with five minutes left in the game.
With 1:30 left in the game; the game was tied at 73 a piece. Another 10 Jaguar turnovers in the second half, with four of them in the last five minutes of regulation. Even with multiple errors, the Jaguars were able to keep the score tied up at 74-74 to go into overtime.
The Jaguars had favorable time to tie the game down three points, but came up short losing to the Steers 85-87.
The Jaguars junior forward Antwone Gonzales lit up the box score in a 30 point and six rebound effort in a duel against the Steers. Junior forward Romeo Postell who delivered a 38 point and 12 rebound performance.
“Even before overtime turnovers killed us and we lost the rebounding battle,” Gonzales said. “24 turnovers we got to be better than that.”
Jaguars losing slump
The Jaguars traveled to Austin to take on the Rams. In a matchup where both teams came in at a below 500 winning percentage, either side was looking to come out victorious.
The contest started off as a high scoring affair with the Rams pulling away in the second half.
The Rams scored 44 points in the second half while shooting at 56.7% as a unit.
Junior forward Antwone Gonzales was the leading scorer for the Jaguars, chipping in 14 points.
The Rams had four starters score in double figures on their way to a win. The Jaguars lost to the Rams 63-80.
The Jaguars drop to 5-17 and 4-14 in Red River Athletic Conference play.
The next home game for the Jaguars is against North American University Stallions on Feb.1 in the Student Recreation Center at 3 p.m.
