Campus serves pizza, floats to honor those who serve

Free Big Red floats and pizza are coming to Patriots’ Casa at noon Friday, May 4. The gathering is an opportunity for students of Texas A&M University-San Antonio and the local community to honor military service members.

The event is a joint effort between the Campus Activities Board, which sponsors Big Red & You, and the Military Affairs office, which holds Pizza with Patriots.

“The RED in Big RED & You stands for Remembering Everyone Deployed,” CAB Vice President Levana Bryant said. “[It’s] part of TAMUSA’s effort to keep the military tradition of the university alive.”

Combining the two events “just makes sense,” said Timothy Smith, A&M-San Antonio military affairs liaison. “We are both trying to promote RED shirt Fridays, to Remember Everyone Deployed.”

RED Shirt Fridays, when students are asked to wear red, began in 2009 as part of the university’s focus on embracing the military. The university now gives red shirts to incoming freshmen while explaining the significance.

Always held on a RED Shirt Friday, the combined event started in the fall of 2016. Initially held once a month, the gathering has been changed to occur quarterly. This is the last such event of spring 2018.

Registration is not necessary; anyone interested needs to visit the lobby of Patriots’ Casa, behind the Frank L. Madla building, at the time of the event.

Students are advised to keep an eye on JagSync to stay updated on the dates and times of future events. For more information, email the Campus Activities Board at CAB@jaguar.tamu.edu, phone at 210-784-1391 or visit the Central Academic Building, room 103.
