Dance team leaps toward tryouts

Students who have school spirit and like to bust a move can audition for the dance team at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. The Lady Jags are in their second year of being active.

Tryouts will take place May 6 starting with registration 8-9 a.m. in the fitness studio next to the fitness center on the first floor of the Madla Building; tryouts will begin at 9 a.m.

A fee of $10 is required the day of the tryouts, and students must bring a headshot, said Analisa Gonzalez, dance team president, at an information session Friday, April 6, in Patriots’ Casa. Students who are trying out must have a GPA of 2.5 and must be enrolled at A&M San Antonio.

Students can register for the tryouts and obtain a tryout packet by visiting the team’s JagSync or emailing Gonzalez at agonz013@jaguar.tamu.edu.

“I am excited to start the team and actually see it grow; the dance team has been in existence since 2016 and not many students are aware,” Gonzalez said.

The dance team is looking to have a group of 15 to 20 members. Right now the team has three officers, according to JagSync.

Victoria Garcia, education freshman, is a prospect in trying out for the dance team.

“I am looking forward to tryouts and trying to understand and learn the certain skills needed,” Garcia said.

Garcia does not have much dance experience but is willing to give it a shot.

“I have always loved the idea of being on a dance team,” Garcia said.

However, Garcia said she is not entirely unfamiliar with performing. She has been a part of show choir. Show choir is a club where students dance or sing depending on the event.

“I feel show choir has helped me grow in some dance routines,” Garcia said.

To audition for the Lady Jags, students must know dance skills such as clean toe touch, right fouettés, clean left, right leap, high kick and tilt kick.

“We ask if you have any tattoos, please cover them,” Gonzalez said. “Headshots will be needed the day of tryouts; it doesn’t have to be professional, but we ask that you do not take a selfie. We want a full headshot.”

Pom and Jazz are the two music themes for the day of tryouts.

“It is important that students trying out for the dance team are familiar with the dance skills, because they will all be incorporated in the dance tryout,” Gonzalez said. “Hair back, dance shoes or tennis shoes, black leggings or shorts, leotard or a black tank top are the essentials for the attire for tryouts.”

Gonzalez, an education sophomore, said she graduated from James Madison High School, where she was on the Madison Dolly dance team during her senior year. The team broke their school record in Nationals. Gonzalez said she has always been involved with dance since her freshman year with pep squad dance team, then the JV Fillies dance team.

As the date gets closer to tryouts, Gonzalez said she and her officers can’t wait to see what talent A&M students have.

The team also has social media accounts, Gonzalez said. The Lady Jags are on Facebook at Texas A&M University-San Antonio dance team and Instagram at tamusa.ladyjags.
