The University Heritage Committee will host Asian American and Pacific Islander Cultural Night 5-7:30 p.m. May 4 at the auditorium. The event is open to the public.
Faye Suficiencia, political science junior and president of the Asian Student Association, said she hopes the cultural night showcase will become a yearly tradition at Texas A&M University-San Antonio.
“To keep continuity, even if most of the members of ASA and myself graduate,” Suficiencia said. “That way we can ensure that Asain Pacific Islander culture is being celebrated in our campus.”
Three to four food vendors will be present at the showcase to sell an array of Asian food that will include Indian, Korean and Filipino dishes.
The showcase also will feature seven performances from several Asian cultures. Each performance is set to last five to seven minutes.
- Deadly Sweet Maid Cafe — Japanese Pop.
- Arathi School of Indian Dance — Bharatanatyam, a medium of the ancient dance form.
- The University of Texas at San Antonio Filipino Student Association — traditional Filipino.
- UTSA KPM — Korean Pop.
- Aloha Entertainment of San Antonio — Hawaiian.
- A&M-San Antonio business administration freshman, Minahil Farhan, will demonstrate a Bollywood performance.
- We Tried Productions — Korean Pop.
In-between performances, Audiences are encouraged to participate in games inspired by Asian culture. The games will be led by the Asian Student Association, Student Government Association and the Campus Activities Board.
The games include:
- The newspaper dance, a parlor game played in the Philippines where a pair shares a newspaper, set on the floor, competing for space as the newspaper gets smaller.
- The red light, green light game inspired by the Netflix series, “Squid Game.”
- A rendition of musical chairs, “Trip to Asia.”
Other activities include:
- A photo booth.
