Coming off a tough weekend at the Saints Four Seasons Classic tournament, the Jags were looking to reestablish themselves after starting their season 1-5.

With doubleheaders against the University of St. Thomas and Williams Wood University, the Jags attempted to sweep the week’s games to regain momentum in the win column.

Wednesday’s doubleheader vs. The University of St. Thomas (2/16)

FIRST GAME:

Both teams started slow. It was scoreless through the first two innings.

Then the Lions homered twice in the top of the third inning and were able to get four runs off three hits.

In the fourth, the Lions scored five runs, including another home run, making the score 9-0.

The Jags battled but could not match the momentum early on.

Final score 9-1.

SECOND GAME:

The Lions continued with the momentum going into the next game, scoring nine of their ten runs in the first inning.

The Jags couldn’t match their explosive batters and struggled throughout the rest of the game to get back in it.

Final score 10-3.

Saturday’s doubleheader vs. William Woods University (2/19)

FIRST GAME:

Heading into the weekend, the Jags wanted to bounce back from Wednesday’s loss. They knew it was going to be a battle against the Owls.

The Jags came out swinging by scoring off a double by freshman right fielder Julia Pinzon in the first inning.

In the second, with the bases loaded, junior second baseman Peyton Vasquez drew a walk to score a run, then freshman third baseman Andrea Ortiz flew out to left field and brought in another run.

Costly errors by the Jags allowed the Owls to even up the score in the third.

Going into the fourth, patience played an important role for the Jags’ batters.

It allowed the Jags to put pressure on the Owls pitching. Four walks and an error in the fourth led to three runs.

Now the score is 6-3.

The Owls didn’t let off the gas, scoring two runs in the fifth.

The Jags matched their pressure by scoring four in that same inning, which was led by Pinzon’s home run that scored three of the four runs.

In the end, the Owls couldn’t keep up with the Jags’ explosive hitting display.

Final score 10-7.

SECOND GAME:

The momentum carried into the next game as the Jags never let up the intensity.

In the first, Vasquez scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Jags’ lockdown defense held the Owls scoreless through four innings.

At the start of the fourth, junior first baseman Melissa Gonzalez hit a single to bring in a run.

For good measure, the Jags scored four more insurance runs in the sixth.

Alongside the defense, junior pitcher Ebbie Rodriguez pitched a complete game shutout, giving up five hits and striking out five.

Final score 6-0.

Standout Player of the Week:

Vasquez has been the standout player over these last four games. She leads the team in walks and stolen bases.  Hitting .500 over these four games played a big part in winning two of the four games.
