A&M-San Antonio blanked by Xavier in loss
Texas A&M University-San Antonio women’s soccer team falls to 2-6-1 after the loss to Xavier University of Louisiana Oct. 3 at the Jaguar Soccer Field.
The Jags gave up five goals and were challenged offensively to score, resulting in no goals.
It didn’t take long for Xaveir’s Gold Nuggets to put points on the board as senior forward Samira Roper scored in the first minute and five seconds of play.
The 1-0 lead by Xavier quickly escalated to a 3-0 lead after freshman midfielder Juliana Kottbauer scored unassisted and senior defender Crislyn Gregory found sophomore midfielder Lea Cordier for a long-range goal.
Kottabauer and Roper found the same success in the second half as they each scored a goal, extending the lead to 5-0 midway through.
It was a lopsided offensive performance with the Jags only totaling two shots on goal opposed to the Gold Nuggets’ 13 shots.
Head coach Tim Moody gave praise to his team for doing some things well while crediting Xavier for exploiting their errors.
“We did a lot of good things, we didn’t capitalize on them, and they took advantage of the mistakes we made early on,” Moody said.
Moody believes as the Jags continue to be below .500, the repetition of playing in these tough games will be key for their development as they gain experience in certain situations.
“We only gain experience by making mistakes and that hopefully as we grow, we get better,” Moody said. “You don’t know exactly what to do in certain situations until you have all those repetitions.”
A&M-San Antonio’s women’s soccer squad will look to bounce back at 1 p.m. Oct. 4 at home against Louisiana State University-Alexandria.
Gold Nuggets hand Jaguars first loss of the season
The Jaguars men’s soccer team suffered their first loss of the season giving up four goals.
Imposing their will early, the Gold Nuggets scored three goals in the first eight minutes of play, giving them a good cushion to start.
It was Xavier’s junior forwards Iman Ouedraogo and Giancarlo Dostilio kicking off to the hot start scoring three goals in the first ten minutes of the contest.
This was unusual territory for the Jags, as they haven’t gone scoreless in a match since the Red River Athletic Conference Quarterfinals last season.
The Jags remained poised to play their style with full-field press, but the game started to get mucked up as yellow cards from both squads were initiated, six between both teams.
The physicality continued into the second half as junior midfielder Christian Guerrero was called for a red card, ejecting him from the match and leaving the Jags shorthanded with ten players on the field. This was Guerrero’s second red card of the season.
Xavier took advantage of Guerrero’s absence scoring off the penalty kick and sealing the deal in the second half.
Head Coach Roberto Jaramillo is eager to see how his team responds to this adversity, suffering their first loss of the season.
“I think my guys will rebound, it’s what we have to do and that’s what we’re going to do,” Jaramillo said.
The Jags are looking to bounce back at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at home against Louisiana State University-Alexandria.
