The men’s golf varsity team of Texas A&M University-San Antonio will compete in the Prairie View Spring Classic tournament on March 14-16 in Houston.
This is the third tournament that A&M-San Antonio will participate in for the team’s inaugural season.
A&M-San Antonio debuted in the Houston Classic hosted by Southwestern Christian University at The Houston Golf Club on Feb. 8-9.
The Jags finished fourth of five teams in the three-round tournament with a score of 1012, 148 strokes over par. They were led by Donald Harper, who finished 11th overall with a 22-over 238, and Javier Jazo, who scored a 23-over 239.
Southwestern University won the event with a team score of 31 strokes over par 895.
A&M-San Antonio recently competed in the Spring Shootout at TPC San Antonio on Feb. 22-23.
This three-round contest included five other schools that competed on two courses with pars at 72. The Jags finished sixth of the six teams with a team score of 1043, 179 strokes over par. Jazo led the team scoring 24-over 240, placing 20th overall individually.
Wayland Baptist University won with a team score of 45 strokes over par 909.
Jazo, a finance junior, commented on the team’s start to the season.
“So far we have played very challenging courses so our scores are higher than we expect. However, the team is extremely eager to get back into tournament golf and shoot some low scores,” Jazo said.
Regarding team goals Jazo added, “We want to be competitive and improve in every tournament. We want to set a high standard for TAMUSA golf for the future.”
The Jags look to improve and build momentum toward the Prairie View Spring Classic as their mission to building champions continues.
Due to inclement weather on Feb. 14 the previously scheduled matchup at the Claud Jacobs Invitational has been rescheduled to March 27-29 in Victoria, Texas.
