Students at Texas A&M University-San Antonio can make mocktails and learn about safe alcohol consumption at 1:30-3:30 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Vista Room of the Central Academic Building, Room 402.
The Office of First-Year Experience is hosting Second Chance Sips: Mocktails with the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, Elissa Gallegos, program coordinator for First-Year Experience, said in an interview Feb. 10.
Representatives from OSRR will give a presentation on alcohol awareness.
After that, Mauricio Cervantes Ocegueda, peer leader and computer science junior, will lead students in making alcohol-free drinks that can serve as alternatives to traditional cocktails. One of the mocktails will be a sour punch margarita with sour punch gummies, lemonade sparkling water, lemon juice and grenadine. Another will be a pina colada with pineapple juice, coconut cream and ice.
The event will also include light snacks such as chips, crackers and cookies.
They will also have recipe cards for students to take home with them.
Cervantes Ocegueda said the event is important because students get to meet new people while also learning about the effects of alcohol poisoning and abuse. This is especially crucial for first-year students adjusting to a new environment, and with spring break approaching, the event ensures that students are better prepared to navigate situations involving alcohol.
This is the third time the Office of First-Year Experience has hosted this type of event on campus. The first event was held in fall 2021 and the second was held in fall 2022.
