The election is around the corner and MOVE Texas knows how to bring the party up while also bringing information about the ballot.
The MOVE Texas chapter at Texas A&M University-San Antonio will host the Party @ Polls Election Day event 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 4 in the courtyard of the Central Academic Building.
The event, which is open to campus and community members, provides a paper version of the ballot and help to understand what’s on it.
Chapter President Selene Torres-Chavez is helping organize the event and has been spreading the word on campus by hosting weekly tabling events in the CAB courtyard every Wednesday.
“It’s important because you are the one who is going to be affected by this the most. There are tax increases, the Spurs are putting in so much money to build a new stadium,” Torres-Chavez said. ”That’s something that the citizens of San Antonio have and that’s why we want to make sure that students are aware of the issues that are happening.”
MOVE Texas is a nonprofit organization founded in 2013 to empower underrepresented youth across the state through civic engagement, leadership development and voter advocacy. The organization emphasizes accessibility and nonpartisan education helping first-time voters understand their ballots without telling them how to vote.
MOVE Texas’s mission focuses on voter registration to ensure students know what to prepare for the upcoming election and future elections.
Attendees can expect refreshments like water, soda and snacks, and participants can bring home custom pins and stickers from the event. There will be music featuring pop and trending radio hits, including artists such as Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan. Participants who fill out a survey about issues that matter to them will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a Nintendo Switch.
Torres-Chavez said she hopes the event will remind participants that their voices matter, especially in local elections.
“You don’t have to wait for a presidential race to make a difference,” she said. ”This is about showing up for your community.”
