The student chapter of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants voted unanimously March 22 to invest in a money box to ensure funds are secure during events.
The society chose a money box instead of a money bag because it can be secured with a key and has capabilities to separate denominations. The society will purchase one after Treasurer Clay Clemons finds a model that will best suit the needs of TXCPA.
“Even if we don’t need it this semester, we will need it in the future,” President Karissa Mitchem said.
Mitchem reviewed upcoming events including the CPA Speaker Series in April. The speakers are:
- Joe M. Guerra, CEO of La Familia Cortez Restaurants on April 8 at 4 p.m. on Zoom.
- Eric Mack, retired deputy senior financial officer of USAA on April 12 at 3 p.m. on Zoom
- Lacey Shedrock, recent CPA license recipient, Holt Cat Machines and Engines, on April 21 at 11 a.m. on Zoom.
Mitchem encouraged the officers to nominate Dr. Eve Lee, assistant professor of accounting, for the TXCPA Outstanding Accounting Educator award.
“Every chance I get I want to try to recognize her for her hard work,” Mitchem said. “I think she is amazing.”
The society, which has two meetings left, discussed tasks to focus on for the upcoming year.
Vice President Brittany Fry announced a year-long paid internship opportunity on campus. This position is opening up for any College of Business student. Fry said interested students can email her at: bfry01@jaguar.tamu.edu.
Fry also said the organization is preparing for the transition of new officers who will be elected at a later date.
Mitchem advises students who want to join the society to visit the JagSync page, hit the blue “join” icon and wait for an email for further instructions from secretary Victoria Ochoa.
The next meeting is at 3 p.m. April 5 on Zoom. The agenda will include discussing current and future events.
