Paella takes over the Pearl

By Jamie Niland and Chris DeLeon

The smell of mouth-watering paella, wine imported from Spain and fresh sangria will fill the streets of downtown San Antonio once again.

The 7th Annual Paella Challenge takes place on March 13 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at The Pearl, 303 Pearl Pkwy Suite 300.

The challenge brings top chef’s from all around the world as well as local high school culinary teams to compete in an Iron-Chef style Paella cooking competition.

Many versions of paella evolved from the traditional Spanish dish to fit cultural preferences and chef’s personal style.

Paella as we know it today may contain chicken, seafood, pork, beans, vegetables, rice and the secret ingredient that gives the dish its golden color, saffron.

The contest has three subcategories: a traditional paella challenge, a contemporary paella challenge, and a high school paella challenge.

Although paella is the highlight of the day, there are several other attractions including live entertainment, hors d’oeuvres and all-you-can-drink wine, sangria and beers.

Tickets are $80 for people 21 or older and $27 for people under 21.

The Mesquite is giving away a pair of free tickets to students. To enter for a chance to win, share this story via social media, and visit The Mesquite newsroom, CAB Suite 320, to answer a trivia question. The deadline to enter is Thursday, March 10 at 5 p.m.

The winner will be announced Friday, March 11 at 12 p.m. on The Mesquite’s Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Winners will receive tickets via email.
