Popcorn and PJ’s: University Library hosts first monthly movie night - The Mesquite Online News - Texas A&M University-San Antonio

Students watch “The Outsiders” as part of the University Library’s first movie night on Sept. 23, 2025 in the BLH Multipurpose Room

The scent of popcorn filled the air of the Texas A&M University-San Antonio Library as it hosted its first monthly movie night of the semester on Sept. 23.

The event was held in the Business Library Hall Multipurpose Room, with provided snacks accompanying a showing of “The Outsiders.”

Released in 1983, “The Outsiders” stars an ensemble cast of now-household names, such as Ralph Macchio and Tom Cruise. The plot chronicles the struggle between two rival teen gangs: the working-class “greasers” and the affluent “socs”.

Evening library specialist Madison Hinojosa organized the event and says the library’s expanded hours made the movie night possible.

“Last year we started expanding our hours so we’re open till midnight most days of the week. And I love movies… so I just figured why not have late night movie events?” Hinojosa said.

The University Library began its expanded hours last fall semester, remaining open to midnight on Mondays-Thursdays and Saturdays.

Hinojosa said she believes that the movie night has helped students recognize that the library stays open late.

“We have all these interactions with students who usually wouldn’t come in,” Hinojosa said. “But now that they know that we’re here, it’s just really nice to have them.”

The University Library will host two more movie nights in the Multipurpose Room this fall:

Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. : “Addams Family Values”

Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. : “Wicked”
