by Kimberly Rivera

Construction for the fourth building at Texas A&M University-San Antonio began Feb. 21. The science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) building is expected to open for classes fall 2018.

On Feb. 9 the A&M System Board of Regents voted in approval of construction for the STEM building. The university received a tuition revenue bond of $63 million through the Texas Legislature.

“This building and its construction are a symbol of opportunity,” university President, Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson said at a recent groundbreaking ceremony. “It supports our academic value of opportunity by providing an environment that inspires learning and helps us foster development.’

The STEM building project, projected to be completed at the end of summer 2018, will be done by design firm, Stantec and construction firm, SpawGlass.

Vice President of Business Affairs Dr. Bill Spindle announced the STEM building will measure 136,000 sq. ft. and comprises 25 classrooms and 12 laboratories.

According to the department of science and mathematics, the building will have teaching laboratories in biology, chemistry, geology, and physics.

It will also house facilities for the study of development, microscopy, the study of diseases, metabolism, genetics, ecology, physiology, behavior, and evolutionary relationships.

In addition, the Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement will move from the Patriots’ Casa to the new STEM building.

An official ceremony for the STEM building will take place later this year in September.
