Students can participate in celebrating their achievements at ‘Dear Me: A Self-Love Letter’ event - The Mesquite Online News - Texas A&M University-San Antonio

Emily Godoy, vice president of the Feminist Advocacy and Empowerment club, and Débora García-Rivera, president and Spanish junior, converse with students at the fall 2024 Involvement Fair tabling event Sept. 3, 2024, in the Science and Technology Building at Texas A&M University-San Antonio.

Students at Texas A&M University-San Antonio can take a moment to write a letter to themselves reflecting on their accomplishments noon to 1 p.m. April 7 in the Central Academic Building lobby.

The Feminist Advocacy and Empowerment group is hosting the “Dear Me: A Self-Love Letter” event, and all students can attend, Débora García-Rivera, the club’s president and a Spanish junior, said in an interview March 26 on Zoom.

García-Rivera said the purpose is to provide students a safe space to write a letter expressing gratefulness to themselves for their hard work this semester.

“I feel like we have a very creative campus,” García-Rivera said. ”I’ve seen a lot of art, and I feel like a lot of people they just need the tools to make something, the tools to express themselves, and I feel like giving that to them during a stressful time at the end of the semester. It will be very liberating for them.”

The organization was also trying to create an impactful event that would let students know there is a community for them through various organizations on campus, García-Rivera said.

The event is free with limited seating as there will only be three tables and eight chairs available. RSVP is optional.

García-Rivera said that despite the event not lasting for long, the entire process should be quick, and students will keep the letters for themselves.

Organizers will provide supplies and materials including markers, a lace-type of paper and cut-outs.

There will also be music and candy at the event.

Students are only urged to have a good mindset and bring something nice to say about themselves, said García-Rivera.

Students may be asked to have their picture taken.

García-Rivera encourages students to participate in the event to take a break from classes and socialize with their peers.

This is the first time the Feminist Advocacy and Empowerment group has hosted this type of event on campus. The group is considering organizing the event at the end of every semester in the future.
