Texas A&M University-San Antonio welcomes Public Health Week with an interactive wellness fair to educate and promote healthy habits.

The Promoting Healthy Habits Wellness Fair will be held at noon April 8, on the first floor of the Central Academic Building. Students and faculty can meet 10 organizations, each featuring their own tables with activities, including suture practice, body mass index testing and free dental hygiene kits.

Participating organizations include the Kinesiology Club, Pre-Health Society and Psychology Club. Each group will provide insight into aspects of physical and mental health.

Nate González, Public Health Jaguars president and community health senior, founded the interest group and said he was inspired to create the fair to raise awareness about health issues that impact everyone, especially the A&M-San Antonio community.

National Public Health Week takes place around the country every year in April and seeks to promote public health, inspire action and build community. This will be the first wellness fair for Public Health Week on campus.

González founded Public Health Jaguars two months ago to empower individuals to create healthy habits that positively impact not only their lives but also those around them. Driven by a deep passion for promoting wellness, González said he is dedicated to educating the A&M-San Antonio community on practices that will enhance the overall public health of the university.

“Part of my job as the public health research assistant for the community health program was to celebrate National Public Health Week,” González said. “And talk about why all of this matters, and why we should encourage one another.”

González said he hopes the event teaches students, that public health is everyone’s responsibility and everyone’s benefit.

Students can expect free organic gourmet popcorn, snow cones and custom public health water bottle giveaways.

The Wellness Fair is free and open to all students with check-in at the entrance using their JagPass. There is no RSVP required.

As part of the week’s celebrations, a mini expert panel will be held from 4-6 p.m. April 8 in the Vista Room on the fourth floor of CAB. The event will feature professionals in the public health field, ranging from cardiovascular surgeons to community health workers, who will discuss their roles and impact in San Antonio. The panel includes a gourmet catered meal, and an RSVP is required through JagSync with 100 spots available.
