The Pre-Dental Club is giving back to the community by contributing to the Thanksgiving food drive on campus. The club is donating canned cranberry sauce to the Mays Center, Suite 111 in the Science and Technology Building on campus.
Members discussed their participation at the club’s meeting on Nov. 19 on Zoom.
Not only are they donating but active club members are able to receive one credit hour of volunteer work per three cans of cranberry sauce. In order to prove the number of cans they donate, they have to capture a picture of it and send it to the club president, Alyssa Lopez.
“Donations are easy ways for you guys to rack up the hours but that’s only to help you with your active membership,” Lopez said.
Donating is just as important to the club as making their presence known on campus.
The Pre-Dental Club will be competing in the window decorating contest for the Lights of Esperanza event on Dec. 1. Window 4 is where the club will showcase their artistic talents and it must be completed by Nov. 29 for the judges to review by Dec. 1.
Members in the meeting were excited to participate in the contest but were unsure of the direction they were going to take.
“I think option one was cool,” member Michael Nickles said. “We’re gonna have to get creative.”
Option one is called “Oh Dentistree.” It’s a tree made of two toothbrushes outlining the shape of a Christmas tree. The inside of the tree is filled in with rows of teeth and to top off their painting and the tree, a star is placed on top of the first tooth.
“Each square can be like an oral hygiene thing or something,” Vice President Carla Muzquiz said. “We can do a story type thing.”
Members said they liked her idea of storytelling through the painting.
The meeting ended with the club undecided of their plans for the window painting but were scheduled to make a decision by Nov. 23 before they start decorating the windows.
