LatinX Heritage will kick off with a cultural night 6-8 p.m. Sept. 15 in the auditorium at Texas A&M University-San Antonio.

“LatinX Kickoff: Nuestra Noche” will be hosted in partnership by the Campus Activity Board; the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission from the Student Government Association; the Mexican American Student Association and the Hispanic Heritage Month Committee.

Sept. 15 marks the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States, celebrating the history and culture of those who are of Mexican, Spaniard, or from any Spanish-speaking nation in Latin America.

The intent of the event is to replicate “El Grito,” or the shout, at midnight Sept. 16, commemorating Mexico’s independence from Spain, president of MASA Natalie Vargas said.

The cultural night will feature live music, dance performances and free food for students, staff and faculty.

CAB event coordinator Hayde Gonzalez Cejas said performances will include bachata and salsa from TD Dance Company, and a performance from Ballet Folklorico Sol de San Antonio. Though the performances are time donations from the dance groups, CAB will be compensating them anyway.

“What makes folklorico so pretty are the dresses,” Cejas said.

Snacks include raspas, popcorn and an assortment of Mexican candy. The candy will be provided by a local Mexican candy shop, Cejas said. The rest of the goodies will be provided by the host organizations.

Between performances, attendants can participate in trivia games to show off their knowledge of LatinX heritage, Cejas said.

Cejas said she is expecting over 150 people to attend the kickoff.

“LatinX students will get to see history, and people who aren’t LatinX will get to learn a little bit of Hispanic/Latino history,” Cejas said.
