The Texas State Employee Charitable Campaign will host its 2025 SECC Fundraiser, followed by the Annual Lip Sync Battle and Costume Contest Oct. 31.

The fundraiser, which supports student scholarships and endowments, will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in front of the Texas A&M University-San Antonio Auditorium.

The SECC will sell $5 combo plates with two slices of cheese or pepperoni pizza and a drink.

Donations will also be accepted in any amount. Donors will be entered into a giveaway to win prizes, including SeaWorld Tickets for four, a gift basket from VIDA, athletic gear and more.

The Annual Lip Sync Battle and Costume Contest will be from 2-4 p.m. inside the auditorium and is free to attend.

The contest, which features performances by staff, faculty and students, has been an annual tradition on Halloween for the university since 2018, with only a brief break during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

“I think there’s something to be said for coming in and having a good time,” said Adrian Jackson, A&M-San Antonio’s associate vice president for Marketing and Digital Strategy. “I think students often feel that faculty and staff are not approachable. So when you see faculty and staff outside of their offices, outside of the classroom, they bring a little something extra to the relationship that I think students can take advantage of and enjoy.”

Each year, the contest has an average of five to six participants per category.

This year’s contest theme is movie soundtracks. Participants are expected to perform soundtracks from their favorite movies.

Categories include best costume and best performance.

Jackson said this year, there are two ways participants can win — by a panel of judges and also a people’s choice award, where attendees can buy unlimited voting tickets for $1 each.

All proceeds from the voting tickets will go toward the foundation.

Winners from previous lip-syncing competitions have performed to songs including “Mamma Mia” by ABBA, 2018; “La Bamba” by Ritchie Valens, 2021; and “Proud Mary” by Creedence Clearwater Revival, 2023.

Jackson noted that students are the real winners every year since donations go toward Texas A&M University-San Antonio Foundation scholarships.

For prizes, winners will receive a trophy and bragging rights for the entire year.
