Students at Texas A&M University-San Antonio can now practice their Spanish skills in a fun and welcoming environment at the university’s new Spanish Club.

The club is associated with the Writing, Language, and Digital Composing Center, and its main goal is to help give students a way to practice Spanish regardless of their major or level of proficiency in the language.

“They can just come interact with the language and work on skills that they want to work on through the club,” said Spanish Club President Zach Zambrano.

The club had its first meeting Feb. 11 where students asked icebreaker questions to start a conversation.

“They used whatever skills they had available to them, and so if they could read in Spanish, that’s how they contributed. If they could answer in Spanish, or they could answer in a mixture of English and Spanish, that was also great too,” Zambrano, a Spanish junior, said.

The club has two types of regular meetings, “Pláticas” and “Charlas Con Café.”

Pláticas sessions are held on the first and third Wednesday of every month and focus on specific events that emphasize conversation and expressing oneself.

Charlas Con Café is held every Tuesday and focuses on practicing Spanish by establishing different linguistic tools and understanding grammar.

Both of these meetings are at 5 p.m. in Room 304 of Classroom Hall.

The club has many meetings planned for this semester, and Zambrano is excited for students to attend.

“We just want people to come into a judgment-free zone to expand their Spanish skills,” Zambrano said. “Our main goal is to meet students where they are regardless of study, regardless of whatever it may be, and encourage them on their language journey.”

Future meetings and events will be posted on the Department of Language, Literature, and Arts’ Instagram, @lla_at_tamusa, and the Writing, Language and Digital Composing Center’s Instagram, @wldcc.tamusa.
