A&M-San Antonio hosts Festival de Cascarones

Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s expanding campus is hosting its first-ever Fiesta party, bringing food, fun and flavor to the South Side 2 p.m.-5 p.m. April 22 at Main Campus Building located at One University Way,  close to S. Zarzamora and Loop 410.

Festival de Cascarones, the campus’ inaugural outdoor fiesta party, will include an array of food booths provided by student organizations and Fresh Horizons Catering. Music will be provided by alumnus VJ Tonyc, a 2011 A&M-San Antonio business graduate.  Families will feel welcome with two moonwalk inflatable bouncers, a bungee station and a booth where children can make their own cascarones.

Festival de Cascarones  will include a private showing of the “Picasso, Amigos y Contemporáneos” exhibit at 4 p.m. This exhibit premiered on March 17 at Main Campus and will continue through May 20.

“The University’s plan for Festival de Cascarones is to make it an official Fiesta event,” said Douglas Carter, assistant vice president for university relations. “One of the requirements is that it takes three years to be sanctioned as an official Fiesta event,” Carter added. “We can apply to the Fiesta Commission after the second year of having the event.”

Other requirements  considered for approval as an official Fiesta event include that the event must be sponsored by a nonprofit organization, open to the public and not duplicate an existing Fiesta event.

“We want to bring graduates back to the campus,” Carter said. “But it is also a way to raise money for scholarships.”
Carter said the University’s inaugural event is alumni-focused and welcomes the community to learn more about the growing campus.
