The Transfer Student Engagement Center is bringing a safari adventure for National Transfer Week starting Oct. 16-20. The events aim to highlight the transfer students of Texas-A&M University-San Antonio.

“We really appreciate our transfer students and the fact that they chose A&M-San Antonio to finish up their degree,” said Juan Espinoza Jr. Assistant Director for Transfer Student Engagement. “We hope that, like this department, along with other departments will be there to help them celebrate because above everything else, that’s the reason why they’re here.”

There will be a kickoff event from noon-2 p.m. Monday in the Central Academic Building Courtyard.

Tuesday is the Coffee & Donuts breakfast event with fraternity Tau Sigma from 9-10:30 a.m. at Patriots’ Casa Driveway.

Wednesday will host a campus-wide scavenger hunt that will be hosted all day and Thursday will be the Silver Dinner to celebrate graduating mentorship program members from 6-8 p.m.

To wrap it up, Friday will be the RSVP-only Painting with a Transfer event from 6-8 p.m. in the Ceremony Room.

Mays Center to host JCPenny Suit-Up event

Students at Texas A&M University-San Antonio can get discounts on professional attire and accessories for an interview or job at the JCPenney Suit-Up Event 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 14 at South Park Mall.

Cheyenne Hayes, assistant director of graduate career development at the Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement, said students can receive up to 50% off items such as suits, pants, dress shoes, wallets and jewelry.

Participants also receive an additional coupon for 30% off.

Hayes said she participated at the last JCPenney event and paid about $20 for a $60 shirt.

Hayes, who also manages the Career Closet in the Mays Center, said students need professional clothes to prepare for their careers.

“No matter what industry that you work in, you always want to make sure that you’re trying to dress to impress,” Hayes said.

Students should visit the second floor of JCPenney and check in with A&M-San Antonio. Palo Alto College and St. Philip’s College will also participate.

Hayes said students must bring their student ID to the event, but their J number or student email will also suffice.

The event is also open to alumni, staff and faculty, who must provide their ID, J or K number or email.

The first Suit-Up event for A&M-San Antonio was in spring 2018. It is typically hosted each semester and has been offered at North Star Mall, where it attracted 20 to 25 students.

Hayes hopes they can surpass that number since the event is being held at a mall closer to the university.

Any leftover coupons will be brought back to campus and students can take one from the Mays Center.

Students can visit A&M-San Antonio’s Career Closet for free professional clothing if they cannot attend this event. They can get up to 6 pieces of clothing and one full suit 8 a.m. to 5 p.m Monday – Friday in the Science & Technology Building in Suite 111.
