Campus Safety Alert Encourages Community to Be Safe, Aware

By Yesenia Camacho

A campus safety alert from the University Police Department was distributed via email to the campus community yesterday at 4:20 p.m.

UPD received a report of an incident that began at a convenience store in the 500 block of New Laredo Highway, near the Texas A&M-San Antonio Satellite Campus, resulting in a shooting that occurred Sunday, April 17 at approximately 10 p.m. on the intersection of Somerset Road and West Southcross Boulevard.

University Communications issued the safety alert on behalf of UPD reminding “students, faculty and staff at all campus locations to be aware of their surroundings at all times and to and be on the alert for suspicious activity.”

Chief John Coleman said that it’s the police department’s obligation to notify the campus community when these events happen.

“The reason that we send out these alerts is not to alarm, but rather to inform the campus of events that are occurring around or on campus. We were simply sending out a message,” Coleman said. “The nature of the notification was of an isolated incident which was not expected to be a continuous event. There is nothing in the police department alert that should make us believe that more of those events would occur.”

Coleman reiterated that faculty, staff and students should be aware of their surroundings and report immediately those things which seem unusual or out of the ordinary.

To report suspicious behavior call UPD at (210) 932-6211. In the event of an emergency, call 911.
