The Mays Center and Crafty Jaguars hosted their Braid for Barks event, which was held in Room 121 of the Science and Technology building Nov. 12.

The event benefits sheltered dogs in the San Antonio area.

President Neveah Mendoza, who has been involved with Crafty Jaguars since 2022, said she did not know the origins of the event but does know why they still continue it today.

”To establish community within Texas A&M system here in San Antonio and also to outreach with other fellow classmates,” Mendoza said.

She also said that they host this event every semester so that if some students miss it they know it will happen again in the following semester.

Mendoza said, it’s important to attend such events to relax from classes and help the community.

“These animals don’t have a choice in what happens to them,” Mendoza said. “It’s something to feel good about.”

Crafty Jaguars Treasurer Noelani Solis-Fuller, a pet owner and avid animal lover, said the event is ideal for those who can’t volunteer at a shelter or adopt a pet.

”If you can’t go out and adopt one I think it’s good that you’re providing toys…and food and donating. At least you’re helping in some way,” Solis-Fuller said.

First-time attendees like computer science sophomore Riyah McClain said attending events like this helps students relieve stress and helps dogs in need.

Psychology sophomore Sophia Terrinoni agreed.

It gets you out and about,” Terrinoni said.“ I think it’s good to just try new things. Yes! Let’s make toys for dogs. Why not? It’s fun.”

Compared with last semester’s event, Solis-Fuller said the turnout this time around was very good.

Students produced about 85 braids during the two-hour event for the Humane Society.

Mendoza said Lori Day from the Mays Center will deliver the braids within the week.
