The Texas A&M University-San Antonio men’s and women’s Jaguars will kick off their home opener Sept. 14 against the Texas A&M University-Texarkana Eagles.
This season marks the third year since the soccer program’s launch in fall 2020.
Roberto Jaramillo, head coach of the men’s soccer team, and Fredy Sanguinetti, head coach of the women’s soccer team, said the teams’ energy and motivation make them unique in the Red River Athletic conference.
“We hope to have a strong start for the home opener on Thursday,” Jaramillo said. “We want to keep doing what we’ve been doing in the preseason: played six games and kept four clean sheets and the team is getting solid game after game.”
Coming off an improved season and qualifying in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament for their first time, both soccer programs are eager to participate in the tournament again.
“We are going to go out there and compete for 90 minutes,” Sanguinetti said. “The team we are going against are a strong team. The girls want to be on the field, they are working hard and the returners are amazing leaders. I tell the girls this: respect them and expect them to do something — respect them but we don’t fear anybody.”
Women’s soccer, 1-1, will kick off at 1 p.m., and men’s soccer, 1-1, will begin at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at A&M-San Antonio’s soccer field located behind MOD C.
